English

Climate change and global warming are among the most important environmental challenges caused by increased greenhouse gasses and human induced activities. Therefore, identifying the drivers affecting the improvement of environmental quality is one of the most effective steps to achieve sustainable economic development. In recent decades, the development of green technologies and efficient use of energy are important measures that have been developed to achieve environmentally balanced economic growth. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of green technologies and energy efficiency on climate change in selected BRICS member countries. For this purpose, panel data over the period 1993-2021 and the (GMM) approach were used. The results showed that economic growth, trade, and natural resource rents have a positive and significant effect on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change and are considered a threat to climate change. Whereas, green technologies, renewable energies and energy efficiency have a significant negative impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and foreign direct investment has no significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly technologies, promotion of green energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency are recommended as important and effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to mitigate climate change and achieve sustainable development in BRICS member countries.
