Atmospheric circulation patterns play a key role in the temporal and spatial distribution of precipitation and occurrence of dry -wet spells in different regions. The aim of this study is investigating the relationship between seasonal average anomalies of pressure patterns and the occurrence of autumn dry periods in northwestern provinces of Iran (West and East Azarbaijan, Ardabil and Zanjan). Dry autumns were identified during the statistical period of 1987-2016, by using the environment to circulation approach and the calculated values of Standard Precipitation Index with DIC software. Then, the autumn season map of anomalies different variables including the geopotential height of 500 hPa, mean sea level pressure (SLP), specific humidity of 700 hPa, mean sea level pressure, geopotential height of 500 hPa and the Hoff-Müller humidity diagram 700 and 1000 hPa levels were obtained and analyzed from the NCAR/NCEP reanalysis data. The results showed that in the dry autumns, there exist a strong positive anomaly accompanied by dominant high-pressures conditions, which blocked the low pressures to enter into the region. The observed positive anomalies of the 500 hPa level height comparing to the long-term average prevented the transfer of the warm and humid air masses of lower latitudes to the study region. Also, the examination of the first and second type Hoff-Muller diagrams of the level of 700 hPa and 1000 hPa between 38 N latitude and 48E longitude during the dry autumns of northwest, Iran shows a significant decrease in the specific humidity, especially in the southern sections of the region. This confirms the importance of Sudanese and combined Sudanese-Mediterranean low-pressure systems in bringing moisture into the study area. The correlation coefficients of the standardized precipitation index (SPI) of the stations under study with the patterns of the autumn seasons in the period (1987-2016) showed that in the dry spells of autumn season, the negative phase of North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAO) has higher correlation with drought occurrence than other climatic patterns.
