Abstract
Today, climate change and global warming are among the most important environmental issues facing humanity. The main cause of climate change is the emission of greenhouse gases resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels and human economic activities. Therefore, identifying the drivers affecting the improvement of environmental quality is one of the most effective steps to achieve environmentally friendly economic growth and development. In recent decades, the development of green technologies and efficient use of energy are important measures that have been taken to achieve higher economic growth and a better environment. Therefore, this study examines the impact of green technologies and energy efficiency on climate change in selected BRICS member countries. For this purpose, panel data over the period 1993-2021 and the (GMM) approach were used. The results showed that economic growth, trade, and natural resource rents have a positive and significant effect on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change and are considered a threat to climate change. Whereas, green technologies, renewable energies and energy efficiency have a negative and significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and foreign direct investment has no significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. Therefore, the development of environmentally friendly technologies, promotion of green energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency are recommended as important and effective strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to mitigate climate change and achieve sustainable development in BRICS member countries.
