Abstract

Monitoring of climate changes and the factors influencing the phenomenon of drought has an important role on the production of the agricultural sector and, subsequently, the country's food security. This research was carried out to investigate and evaluate the relationship between SPEI and various meteorological factors with the production of crops in Kerman province. To do this, the long-term average of meteorological variables and SPEI index for the period of 1991 to 2018 was used. The selected meteorological data were maximum and minimum air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity, precipitation, evapotranspiration, dew point temperature, pressure, and sunshine durations. The analysis of the relationship between the production and climatic variables and drought was done using multiple regression models. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between meteorological variables and drought with the crop production. In general, based on the findings of this study, the most effective climatic parameters were identified as wind speed, sunshine hours, precipitation, evapotranspiration, dew point temperature, air pressure, and air temperature. The average value of the determination coefficient in the fitted models between climatic variables and the production of wheat, barley, potato, onion and alfalfa crops was estimated between 0.4 and 0.55. In other words, about 50% of the changes in crop production in Kerman province were a function of changes in climatic parameters and meteorological drought in the study period.
